About Dormant Mapping
Making the physical world easier to understand.
Buildings are incredibly physical, but the way we experience them online is still surprisingly flat.
We get floor plans, photos, and lists of dimensions. They give us information, but they don't always make a space easy to understand.
We think there's a better way.
We turn existing floor plans and building information into interactive 3D spaces, helping people better understand where they might live before ever stepping inside.
Why we care
The idea came from a frustration Nathan Wituk had while moving into his own college apartment.
He had the floor plan. He had the dimensions. But he still couldn't really picture the space.
How big would the bedroom actually feel? Would his furniture fit? Where would a desk go? What would the apartment feel like once everything was inside it?
The information existed, but understanding it still meant mentally reconstructing an entire space from a flat image. Which, unless you wanna get your Legos out, is pretty difficult.
It wasn't just Nathan.
"56% of home buyers say they wasted time viewing homes they would have skipped if they had understood the floor plan first."
"74% agree that a dynamic floor plan helps them decide if a home is right for them."

Now imagine being an out-of-state college student trying to decide where you're going to live for the next 12 months, potentially without ever seeing the space in person.
From floor plan to space
We're not trying to replace floor plans. We're making them easier to understand.
By translating 2D information into interactive 3D spaces, we can make layouts, room sizes, furniture placement, windows, and the relationships between spaces much easier to visualize.
Because choosing where you're going to live shouldn't require mentally reconstructing a building from a PDF.
The spaces we choose shape how we live. Understanding them shouldn't be left to imagination.
